To be honest I had no clue what the hell the #MerMay challenge was until my husband, RisingFox mentioned it one night. He said May is apparently the month where artists draw mermaids (he didn't know about it either until he saw people posting pics of mermaids on Twitter).

One of my friends asked me if I'm going to do one, but I was on the fence since I already got bunch of other projects that I had planned on doing. Although I wasn't going to bother with it, I got tempted to do one so here it is (dammit, I hate bandwagons Smiley: Ugh).

This is one of my old characters, Minami; she belongs in the same universe as Algea and Kaliyan. I did a couple sketches of her 4 years ago (which I posted on my Tumblr account) back when I was working on some random game idea. Since I always wanted to do a full rendition of this character, I just took one of the sketches and worked from there (psh, if it wasn't for this MerMay challenge, I probably would've never colored it).

I based Minami's design off of Juvenile Emperor Angelfish; I always loved the vivid, electric blue spiral pattern on that fish. She has the ability to temporarily transform into a human. Her story starts off with her being imprisoned and showcased in a troupe as a creature of the sea that holds the power of immortality. Fortunately, Minami gets saved by a mysterious traveling priestess that happened to pass by, but she actually has been in acquaintance with that woman 800 years ago...

This whole MerMay thing actually made me want to do more artwork of mermaids, but I need to get back on other projects, so I'll be doing them outside of the art challenge (not gonna be a crime, since people draw and post mermaids all year long, regardless of what day/month it is, right?).
